On a recent trip to Japan, Amani and her mom were exposed to many new cultural experiences.
But the ultimate highlight of the trip was getting to make their very own chopsticks!
This unique activity took them on a sensory adventure. The distractions of the city receded as they appreciated the tactile quality of the wood, deciding on the best approach to shape and smooth it, which gently revealed its earthy smell.
Sustaining this heightened concentration invariably unlocked the elusive flow state that accompanies deep and mindful immersion, which imbued in both Amani and her mom a sense of deep focus, peace – which is apt since Amani’s name means peace in Swahili – and appreciation for “old-school” fun that isn’t digitally mediated.
And the cherry on top? Amani and her mom were able to share this anecdote with friends and family on their return to South Africa, and then produce, with a flourish, the very chopsticks they’d made with their own hands! Not a generic set of chopsticks mind you, but ones personally and lovingly crafted, and embossed with their initials.

Create your own personalized chopsticks with hands-on guidance. Your experience includes shaping and polishing your chopsticks, with optional engraving. Our standard chopstick sets are crafted from carefully selected Standard Pine, Beech, or Ash wood. For clients who want something more distinctive, we also offer extra options in Walnut, Kiaat, or Oak. You can choose the wood type that best suits your taste.
